Serological typing of Staphylococcus epidermidis strains by the serum-soft agar technique.

Antisera to five different diffuse forms of Staphylococcus epidermidis were prepared in rabbits as a mean of serological differentiation of S. epidermidis strains. These antisera converted the growth types of the homologous strains from diffuse to compact form in serum-soft agar but did not convert the heterologous strains. The converting activities of the antisera were absorbed out with homolo...

Polymyxin-coagulase-mannitol-agar. I. A selective isolation medium for coagulase-positive Staphylococci.

A selective, differential plating medium was developed for the isolation and identification of coagulase-positive and mannitol-fermenting staphylococci. Coagulase produced by growing Staphylococcus aureus caused an opaque zone of fibrin to form around each colony. Several strains of S. aureus produced a visible coagulase reaction by 8 hr, and all strains gave a positive reaction before 12 hr. M...

Supernatants from Staphylococcus epidermidis grown in the presence of different antibiotics induce differential release of tumor necrosis factor alpha from human monocytes.

Bacterial products from gram-positive bacteria, such as peptidoglycan, teichoic acid, and toxins, activate mononuclear cells to produce tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF). The present study evaluated the release of soluble cell wall components from Staphylococcus epidermidis capable of inducing TNF after exposure of the bacteria to various antibiotics. A clinical S. epidermidis isolate (694) was...

Effects of human serum and apo‐Transferrin on Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A biofilm formation

Biofilm-associated Staphylococcus epidermidis infections present clinically important features due to their high levels of resistance to traditional antibiotics. As a part of human innate immune system, serum shows different degrees of protection against systemic S. epidermidis infection. We investigated the ability of human serum as well as serum component to inhibit the formation of, and erad...

Staphylococcus epidermidis Induces Complement Activation , Tumor

Introduction Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and IL-I are thought to mediate many of the pathophysiologic changes of endotoxemia and Gram-negative bacteremia. In these studies, heat-killed Staphylococcus epidermidis were infused into rabbits to determine whether an endotoxin (LPS)-free microorganism also elicits cytokinemia and the physiologic abnormalities seen in Gramnegative bacteremia. S. epide...
